Can I use any type of candle for example the only candle I have is a yankee candle type of candle that’s red and scented in a glass jar will that work ?

Yes your intent matters as said in TOZ you can even do it astrally. If you can come close to black would be fine.. Electric blue will also do.

Any kind of candle or flame. I used a little birthday cake candle.

Do it outside. The paper makes a lot more smoke than you expect when you burn the paper.
