"Numbers govern the world, and in them lies the cause of all things." (Attributed to the Pythagorean school by Aristotle in Metaphysics, Book I).
"Numbers are the thoughts of the gods, and their repetition is a song to divine harmony" (Porphyry, paraphrased from Life of Pythagoras)
"Numbers have a soul and a divine power, and are the first principles of creation." (Passed down by Porphyry on Pythagoras)
"The Pythagoreans say that things exist by imitation of numbers, and that numbers are the substance of things." (Metaphysics, Book I, 985b).
