BTW there's a 5-part meditation program by Swami Satyananda Saraswati that guides you to total thoughtlessness by the ignoring principle I said. The first part involves observing the external environment, sounds, smells, sensations e.t.c. until you no longer find them interesting (that can take about a month). When you can have your phone ring without you reacting to them immediately then you can go to the second part which involves observing your thoughts. Again you do that for a month until you no longer find them interesting. The 3rd part is about creating and destroying a thought. The 4th part is about relaxing, getting into a light trance and observing the subtle thoughts that don't surface in the waking state. The 5th part is total thoughtlessness.
