Microsoft defender actually sends false detection of spywaret. It damaged my Operating system a year ago on my pc because it told me my "computer was infected" and tried to close my accessibility to using my browser and everything. I am guessing we both have different experiences. IMO out of all free anti viruses i would look at defender as the last one to have.

Or, at least use MSE or Microsoft Defender. I, myself, use two: Microsoft Defender and WEBROOT (cloud) with my Windows 8 (yes, I turned back on Defender - want to know how, I will give you the how-to link - and I couldn't be more happy. They work extremely well together. And before anyone says it: Yes, WEBROOT is designed to work alongside other anti-virus software packages. And Yes, typically, mixing antivirus software can be a bad thing, no arguments. Of course, Windows 8 never told me it auto-shuts down all antivirus software when downloading a second. No worries, though, I turned it back on.
In the end, if you don't want to pay, I have been happy with Microsoft Defender, MSE, and AVG in the past.

Norton sucks. Get MalwareBytes, or Avast. They're both free. Trend Micro also has a website scanner, but overall, it's very annoying to have.
@EnHaradrenAmlug AVG is good too.

I recommend Norton. It costs, but oh, is it good.

You should look into getting some anti virus software, as well as some internet protection software. I personally use AVG and recommend it. When you click on a link to a risky site or a site that has a virus, AVG will stop you. Look into it.
