CH is properly pronounced as the German Ich, there is no English equivalent. The CH sound is made in the soft palate towards the throat, not in the front/hard palate as in English.

Is this an ach-laut or an ich-laut? When I listened to HP Pythia's recording of the square, I heard more of an ich-laut.

The Sanskrit C and CH are palatal consonants pronounced with the soft palate in the back of the mouth, like she wrote, just like ñ in Muñka. The German ach-laut is pronounced further back in the throat. So yes, it is close to the ich-laut if comparing to German.
