I'm not that knowledgable on astrology, so I'm not the best to answer this specifically. But I do understand what you're talking about.
It is similar to invoking the elements, and the effects that come with this.
Lately I've been focusing on Earth, and as such, become more focused, more still of mind, to best describe it, I am very 'grounded' and have a solid focus.
The same as if I invoke Fire, I become more louder, more radicle and sudden decisions ect.
It is similar with the other elements.
And as far as I know, this works much the same with the Planets when focusing on them. Working the squares works to 'iron out' the creases we have in our planets so to speak. Much like you would invoke an element you are lacking in, you can do the square of a planet you are also lacking in. It all comes around to the overall balancing out of the soul to ascend into the true self.
Again, perhaps someone better with astrology can answer better.
Try invoking some earth or water, or just surrounding yourself with calm blue energy whenever you're feeling 'cranky' or flustered. This should help.

How well are you using affirmations and visualizing/focusing your intention for the working? I have had this problem with other energy sources such as the elements, if you're not solid enough in your focus when using any kind of energy on yourself then it's bound to do it's own thing to some extent. I have found it helps to end workings by continuing to visualize your goal and use affirmations for about 10 minutes after you have stopped raising energy, that way you make sure all the energy you have used is properly directed.

I noticed it too Shannon! And I was programming it correctly, but it still seemed to have that side effect. Especially this last time I did it, my 3rd time total, and the end I was ready to do some damage lol but I kept my cool. It completely eased up when I finished the square. Maybe it's just for those of us who have Mars natally placed in it's home or exhaulted signs?

I have mars and scorpio in first house,Mars and plutoI was wondering if its okay to do mars square?pluto scorpio as well as scorpio is ascendent.
In addition to getting angry easily I also became more sexual... Hmm... Imagine having mars, aries and or scorpio in first house
