Familiars?

How do I get a familiar? Do you get to pick what kind of animal it will be? Within reason of course. Not a dragon or some unrealistic crap like that. I'm thinking a simple crow would suffice. I read on Jos that some of the demons give really good familiars. But how would one go about getting them? Would the familiar be on the astral plain? Or physical? Anyone who can put my questions to rest would be much appreciated.

I don’t think my dogs are familiars but how would I know? And even if they aren’t do I still need to clean their auras? Thanks!
